THE BASICS OF PHYSICIAN SELF CARE
Dr. Michael Kaufmann BSc, MD, CCFP, FCFP, Dip. ABAM
In 1995 Dr. Kaufmann became the founding Director of the Physician and Professionals
Health Program of the Ontario Medical Association - a service designed to assist doctors
and other health professionals with substance abuse, psychiatric disorders and other
personal health and behavioural problems. Dr. Kaufmann is a past chairperson of the
Physician Health Committee of CSAM and the Canadian Physician Health Network,
a national affiliation of physician support programs. He is a member of the Expert Advisory Committee for the Centre for Physician Health and Wellbeing and a faculty member of the Physician Manager Institute, both of the Canadian Medical Association.
In 2003 Dr. Kaufmann was awarded a Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of his work in the field of doctors’ health and in 2009 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement in Addiction Medicine Award from the Addiction Medicine Section of the Ontario Medical Association.

MINDFULNESS FOR HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONERS - A Transformative Process
Dr. Tom Hutchinson, MD, FRCP(C)
Professor, Department of Medicine, McGill University,and
Directory, McGill Programs in Whole Person Care
In 2002, in order to enlarge his focus on the quality of patients’ lived experience,Dr. Huchinson changed his clinical practice to Palliative Medicine and joined Dr. Balfour Mount in developing McGill Programs in Whole Person Care. The Programs are aimed at enlarging the Western Health Care mandate from cure and prolongation of life to an equal concern with patients’ quality of life. The Programs seek to study, understand and promote the role of health care in relieving suffering and promoting healing in acute and chronic illness as a complement to the disease focus of biomedicine.

Dr. Gabor Maté M.D.
Dr. Gabor Maté is a physician, author, seminar leader and public speaker. His four books, are all Canadian bestsellers and his work has been translated into over sixteen languages on five continents. The most recently published, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction has been a #1 national bestseller and has been awarded the Hubert Evans prize for literary non-fiction and has been nominated for the George Ryga Prize for Social Awareness in Literature and also for the Vancouver Book Prize.
In 2009 Dr. Maté has been honoured with an Outstanding Alumnus Award from Simon Fraser University. His next book, to be published in 2010, will be The Bully Syndrome: A New Look at a Contemporary Malaise, co-written with developmental psychologist Dr. Gordon Neufeld.
