The General Practice Psychotherapy Association (GPPA) is the only non-profit professional association in Canada dedicated to promoting medical psychotherapy in primary care. A physician licensed to practice medicine in Canada, and who practices under the Canadian Medical Association Code of Ethics. The GPPA Maintenance of Competence Program requires Clinical members to obtain a minimum of 36 hours of both continuing education and continuing collegial interaction over 3 years.
A qualified Clinical member with a minimum of 200 hours psychotherapy practice experience, 100 hours supervision, and 50 hours personal growth work. Required to obtain 75 hours of both continuing education and continuing collegial interaction over 3 years. For more information download certificant.pdf.
A qualified Certificant member with formal, comprehensive psychotherapy training in at least one recognized discipline; a minimum of 2,000 hours psychotherapy experience; 100 hours supervision with at least two independent supervisors; successful completion of the GPPA Supervisor Training Program. Required to obtain 75 hours of continuing education and 75 hours of continuing collegial interaction over 3 years. For more information download mentor.pdf
In recognition of outstanding contribution to the GPPA, a lifetime Honorary status may be awarded. There are no practice or maintenance of competence requirements. Current honorary members are Dr. Dianne McGibbon and a founder of the GPPA, Dr. Terry Burrows.
A lay person, professional or organization not eligible for Clinical or Student membership, who is interested in the objectives of the GPPA.
A medical student attending a Canadian university, or foreign medical graduate enrolled in a formal pre-residency training program in a Canadian faculty of medicine.
Clinical, Certificant or Mentor members not working for remuneration in Canada due to full disability for the year, out of the country for the year, or retired from clinical practice.
